The rustic river cottage is filled with history and many fond memories for MaLode guides. Once the guide house, there was a family of frogs living under the sink back in the day! Most adventurous award goes to then Head Guide, BR, who ski jumped from the roof of the cottage on his mountain bike back in 1984 and careened down the slope to the beach! Now a medical doctor practicing in Park City, BR advises against such foolishness for his own kids. Most constructive goes to DV, Chief of the Russian Park Service, who sipped vodka on the porch during the official Russian scoping visit to the Lake Tahoe Rim Trail. The discussion was productive, there is now a similar trail around Lake Baikal in Siberia.

“Rustic” means rural, plain, simple and the river cabin is all these. Although it offers housekeeping amenities such as a kitchen with stovetop/oven and refrigerator, private bathroom with shower, fold down “Murphy” double bed, couch, overstuffed chair and electric fireplace- this place is not fancy, and it sure ain’t the Hilton!  A generous bookshelf covers one wall in the front room and the dog-eared collection of books speaks of a time when reading and reflection were still possible. In Spring and Fall the cabin is cozy when there is a chill in the air and the second room with two bunk beds is intended for the younger set and small families.

Once Summer arrives though, most folks who use the cabin stay outside and cool off in the river or hang out on the beach until after dark. Mother Nature provides the perfect air conditioner, the cabin does not. Seek out the MaLode eddy as breezes play among the willows and bird songs entertain until the stars come out! Be sure to ask about the Nisenan grinding holes, Otter Island, the Nature Trail and other unique aspects of the camp.
